What Strength Peepers Reading Glasses do I Need ?
As people age the normal elasticity of the lens in our eye is lost, and without this flexibility the eye has increasing trouble in focusing and seeing close objects clearly, especially so in dim light conditions. This is referred to as Presbyopia and is a vision condition in which the focusing power of the eye is gradually lost. Presbyopia may seem to occur suddenly, but the actual loss of flexibility takes place over a number of years. Presbyopia usually becomes most noticeable in the mid-forties and is yet again one of those wonderful things we can look forward to as we age. It is not a disease and it cannot be prevented. Some signs of presbyopia include having to hold reading materials at arm’s length to read, blurred vision in dim light at normal reading distance, and eye fatigue along with headaches when doing close work. Presbyopia is not the same as farsightedness which relates to a less than perfect shape and curve of the eye, which is usually an inherited trait.
To Print out the chart at right. On PC right click and select print. On Mac [control + click]. Hold printed chart at your normal reading distance and WITHOUT your glasses, read each line from top to bottom. The first line where you can no longer clearly read the text will have a suggested magnification strength indicated. This is the suggested strength that should work for you. Your eyecare professional should always be consulted on a regular basis when vision problems occur. You should also have an annual vision checkup if you are over 40 to check for glaucoma.
